Can getting a dog help me in coping with my loss and stress? I lost a close family member this year. Also I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me and so I scored very badly in my semester due to all this. I feel lonely and depressed and I don’t find joy in things that I used to love. I want to get a dog but I feel that maybe I will not be able to take care of him or my emotional situation will not be good for him??

Yes - taking care of a pet will definitely help you cope with your loss and your stress. Apart from this taking up an engaging hobby, will also help you cope well. Having a pet entails its own responsibilities – for eg. Pets get sick, need to be loved, have to be walked and exercised daily, etc. A friend of mine couldn’t go for a holiday, for more than a couple of days, because he couldn’t get someone to take care of his pet when he was away for that long. I suggest you speak to a few people who have pets, to understand the responsibilities of having a pet - before you decide to keep one. If you are finding it difficult to cope with your loss and your stress – speak to a counsellor. He/she will help you through this difficult phase. Take care, Glenn.
